How Does Solar Power Work?

Solar Power Systems is are basically quite simple to understand.
Solar Panels (also known as photovoltaic or PV cells) are mounted onto (generally) aluminium frames which are secured to your roof. The solar panels rely on a state of change of the silicon solar cells they are made from, to generate D.C. electricity when sun’s energy (solar energy) falls onto the panels. D.C is the same type of electricity that , for example, batteries produce. This D.C. electricity needs to be converted into A.C. power that can be used to power our household appliances like our T.V’s/lights etc. This is where the solar inverter comes in. It is an electronic device that converts the D.C. from your solar panels to A.C. The final component of your solar power system is the solar meter which measures the amount of power that your solar power system produces and the amount of solar electricity fed back onto the electricity grid for which you get paid or credited at a rate determined by the solar feed in tariff.
Solar Power Brisbane-The Solar Power Components in Detail:
Solar Panels. There are 2 commonly used types of solar panels you may here about - monochrystaline and polychrystaline .Sounds complicated? not really the 2 terms refer to to crystal form of the silicon material that produces electricity when sunlight strikes it. The difference is fairly minimal , but monochrystaline are more commonly used . Size for size they produce more power than  polychrystaline solar panels. Put another way for the same size solar power systems , say 1.5KW will take up slightly more roof space when using polychrystaline solar panels.Polychrystaline panels perform slightly better in high temperatures. Probably the most important issue when selecting solar panels (your solar installer will discuss in detail with you) is the quality , warranty and back up should a problem occur. See the Suntech Solar Panel Review video for an in depth view of how PV or photovoltaic solar panels are made at the bottom of the Solar Power Brisbane home page.

Solar Inverter- The inverter or grid connect inveter as they are known because they feed power produced from your solar panels back onto the electricity grid, is designed to convert the DC from the solar panels into AC power . There is a huge array of inverters available in the Australian renewable energy marketplace. SMA is a German brand inverter (pictured below) that has an excellent reputation and is often used in ‘premium’ solar power systems.Inverter efficiency is basically a measure of how much of the solar energy your solar panels produce is ‘wasted’ in the conversion from DC to AC. Again it varies little between brands -look for the best warranty, back up and support . I suggest only use brands that have been on the market for 4 years or more and have a track record of reliability.

Warranty-Standard warranty on most inverters in Australia is 5 years. Some companies offer an extended warranty and given the ‘retail’ cost of a 1.5kW to 2kW inverter is around $700-$1500 , depending on the features and quality, it may be worth considering this.
